It has come to our attention that there has been some misinformation circulating concerning the 17th running of the marathon in Long Beach, California in 2001. In our efforts to keep you informed, we would like to clarify the information.

In April of this year, a new company, International City Racing, LLC, was granted the permit by the City of Long Beach to operate the marathon. This result of this action denied the permit to the previous promoter, Pro Sports and Entertainment Inc. of Santa Barbara. This year's race, re-named the Long Beach International City Marathon, will be held on November 11, 2001.

The day's events will include a Marathon and Half Marathon, a Wheelchair and Handcycle Marathon and Half Marathon, a Bike Tour, an Inline Skate Marathon and Half Marathon, Children's Fun Run, as well as a two-day Health and Fitness Expo. Race day events are expected to draw over 12,000 participants and thousands more at the Health and Fitness Expo.

The Long Beach International City Marathon is operational and is the only marathon event permitted and sanctioned by the City of Long Beach for the year 2001.

We hope that you will join us and experience the tradition of this event. Registration is now available online or you may request an application to be mailed to you. If you have any questions, you may visit us at the official website www.runlongbeach.com or you may contact us at (562) 728-8829.

See you in November,

Jim Knaub International City Racing Long Beach International City Marathon

Thanks for the update, Jim. I hope the race continue the well done runner-centered style of the old edition, and is a huge success. If I recall the names correctly you've got some knowledgeable people managing the race. Maybe I can pick up another shirt.

Thanks for your support Don! We have formed an incredible group to bring this race back to the level that runners expect. International City Racing (ICR) is headed by Bob Seagren 68 Olympic gold medallist in the pole vault. His expertise in quality event management and sponsorship marketing is unparallel. As for my part, I am a 5 time winner of the Boston Marathon (wheelchair div.) and have raced all over the world for some 22+ years, so I have seen a few races. Our goal is to build this race into an incredible experience for athletes of all levels with the support and experience of some of the staff from the previous staff. Please send me your contact info and I would be happy to see that you get a shirt as soon as they come out!- Jim Knaub

<< jim knaub is a stud >>

A TOTAL stud.

What Jim didn't mention is that each of his Boston wins ('82, '83, '91, '92, '93) were also the world's best at the time, according to Boston's official program.

Jim, I thought I recognized your name from when I lived in Boston in the early 80's. I used to do a lot of sports photography back then and somewhere in my files, I have a slide of you on Comm. Ave just before the left turn up Hereford in '83.

Good luck with Long Beach!

Hey, thanks for the kind words- that was a long time ago! I think about 30lbs or so!! Working with this race has been a blast and it brings me back to working with Bob Seagren ('68 gold in the pole vault) - a guy who is like a brother, he knows event and sponsorship management like nobody else. We are looking forward to a great event so please let me know if you are planning to attend because it would be great to meet you- JK

Jim, after my last post about having a slide of you, I became inspired, went into my files and voila - there you were, right where I filed you (your photo, that is)18 years ago!

Reading your initial post about winning Boston, I immediately remembered this photo because of it's unique framing. A Boston cop blocks 1/3 of the frame on the right in the near foreground. A white official vehicle fills the left 1/3 of the frame in the foreground. In the background, left of you there's a cyclist, right of you is a motorcycle officer. All of these elements are out-of-focus.

Then in the middle 1/3 of the frame, there you are, straight-on to the camera, in an upright position, with clear, sharp focus. It was the only good frame I caught of you, because within milliseconds, the cop was in my frame, and you turned right up Hereford. My guess is that you were slowing just prior to the turn.

Aesthetically speaking, it's a great snap of a winning athlete in a significant event. If I can figure out a way to scan the slide on my daughter's scanner, I will do so this evening and forward it to you.

Later on that day, I shot another really good photo of another wheeler, Jennifer Smith, a really beautiful young woman as she makes her way up that gentle incline on Hereford. The look of determination on her face is priceless. Immediately next to her, slightly behind and in soft focus is a runner, from the waist down, in mid-flight. This one I framed and have right next to my desk. I sometimes think it would be awesome to track her down and send her the photo, but with such a common name, where would I begin? Might be a job for Ann Landers . . .
