...and it was just a minute, but I actually felt just a little tiny bit, well, fit. It was the last few hundred yards of my 30-minute joggle, and it's on a very very slight, but long (don't forget we're talking beginner here!) hill. I'd been walking for a couple of minutes to get my breath back, and I eyed the long hill - it's really VERY slight - and thought, right. There's a baked spud waiting for me just around the corner - let's see what happens. So I attacked it (the hill, not the spud). Ran with a very determined tread and pumping arms and a HUFF huff huff huff HUFF huff huff huff, and really felt rather good.
then I got the mother of all stitches so I didn't have a glorious entrance when I got home, but - just for a minute...

Congratulations. Those feelings will, hopefully, come a little more often in the future.
I remember a race last year where, for about two minutes, my body 'remembered' what it felt like to run cross country in college. I am sure that I was actually several minutes slower than my college pace and several minutes faster than I could possibly sustain for any reasonable length of time.
But for those few minutes, I was 19 and 115 lbs. again.

huh?
I think I misunderstood something here. I hope I was not offending you unintentionally.
Your story about the hill made me feel like I wanted to help you in your struggle.

Spot the smiley, Elisabeth! I understood your wanting to help me, I just made a joke by taking your comment deliberately out of context! Never mind - thank you for your warm feelings and sorry about my Brit sense of humour!

I am ashamed now.
Nevertheless - did you do that hill again?

Don't be ashamed! And yes, I did! I've decided it's to be my last minute push every time I use that route! And today I ran 7:19 before having to stop!! I'm getting there!!!!
