I ran my first 10k at 1:15 or a pace of 7:42- gasp that is slow!!! Ok, it was my first one, and I wasn't really ready for it (i.e. week 3 of a 10 week 10k clinic...) and I really just wanted to finish.
I run 5k in about 35 mins and really would like to take some time off and speed up! I hate being last.. I am not a skinny gal, but running has really helped take some weight off and I feel that my stamina is pretty good. I have HRM that I stopped wearing when I started running outside, but perhaps I should start wearing it again and set a higher minimum rate. I think it usually sat around 160 or so (I am 30) and when I run with the group, we usually talk alot so I know I am running a slow pace! I guess as more weight comes off, I will probably get faster..
Any tips? I wanna be faster!
Thanks!

In four months, I've got a lot faster (not fast but faster )than when I started - and I put it down to running regularly and further. I find it helped me a lot in my 5k race yesterday - knowing I could run 6 miles slowly, I felt I could keep going faster for 3. Before I tackle a 10k, I expect to be running 10-12 miles once a week and 6 miles or so on most of the other days.
The other thing is 'speedwork' such as intervals and hills. I'll let others advise you on that - or read the answers to the question I'm about to ask on speedwork myself. charlie
