Oh, Hi! I was curious what you thought and had any opinions concerning my blood being slightly tired. My platelets are at 138. They normally should be at a minimum of 150. My white and red blood cells are just a little under the minimums. My ferritin is up at a good spot now. But, my heptaglobin, the protein that isn't blood is very, very low and the doctor now says that he would like me to come in and do a bone marrow biopsy. He seems to think that I have March hemolysis, which is due to running. But, I'm thinking that's possible. Maybe what I should do is stop running for a full month instead of going through with the bone marrow tests and see if the numbers get better. I would tend to think that after running 50 miles a week, my numbers could improve. I think a bone marrow at this point might be still a little preliminary. Maybe I should try backing off from running for a while. I appreciate any insight you might have.

below the normal range. I was diagnosed with mild anemia. (My running increased at the same time.) I saw a hematologist who did a bone marrow biopsy. The results were negative. Since then I have introduced a little bit of red meat into my diet (liver) and became a little more conscious of protein (I am still mainly veggie, but eat chicken, tuna, egg whites and turkey occasionally. Bottom line: My numbers are still slightly below normal and I feel great. Morale: Normal for you may not be normal for the rest of the population. I don't know what march hemolysis is but my theory on my own situation is that my heart pumps greater blood volume than 'normal' because I am an endurance athlete, therefore the concentration of hemolobin, RBC etc is going to be lower. I firmly believe it is a matter of greater volume, not lower numbers. (Check Pete Pfitzinger's book on advanced marathoning for corroberation.) My advice, have the biopsy for peace of mind. It is only mildly painful. If it shows up negative which I bet it will, then just be sure to get your blood checked 1x per year and put it behind you. I wouldn't stop running unless you want to.
